Cryptography has become one of the most essential technologies for securing digital communication and protecting sensitive information against unauthorized access. With the rapid growth of the Internet, cloud computing, e-commerce, mobile applications, and the Internet of Things (IoT), organizations increasingly rely on cryptographic techniques to ensure confidentiality, integrity, authentication, and non-repudiation. Over the years, numerous cryptographic techniques have been developed, ranging from traditional classical ciphers to modern symmetric and asymmetric encryption algorithms, cryptographic hash functions, and emerging keyless cryptographic approaches. Each technique possesses unique characteristics, advantages, limitations, computational complexity, and security properties that make it suitable for specific applications. This research presents a comprehensive comparative study of major cryptographic techniques, including Classical Cryptography, Symmetric-Key Cryptography, Asymmetric-Key Cryptography, Hash Functions, and Keyless Cryptography. The study discusses the historical evolution of cryptography, explains the working principles of each technique, and analyzes widely used algorithms such as Data Encryption Standard (DES), Triple DES (3DES), Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), Blowfish, Rivest–Shamir–Adleman (RSA), Diffie–Hellman, and Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA). The comparison is conducted using several performance metrics, including security strength; key size, computational complexity, encryption speed, memory requirements, scalability, and practical applications. Furthermore, the paper highlights the advantages and disadvantages of each cryptographic technique and discusses their suitability for different security environments. The comparative analysis demonstrates that symmetric encryption algorithms provide high-speed encryption for large datasets, whereas asymmetric algorithms offer secure key distribution and authentication. Hash functions ensure data integrity without requiring secret keys, while keyless cryptography represents an emerging direction for future secure communication systems. The findings of this research assist researchers, network administrators, cyber security professionals, and students in selecting appropriate cryptographic techniques based on application requirements, computational resources, and desired security levels. Future research directions include lightweight cryptography, post-quantum cryptography, block chain security, and artificial intelligence-based cryptographic systems
